From friendship and music, to tenants’ rights and disability advocacy, Newham’s LGBT+ communities were served by a range of incredible organisations in the 1980s. This exhibition will showcase some archival highlights from around Newham.
Discover performance hubs such as the Tom Allen Centre’s bold programme of gay comedy, music and theatre, or drag shows at The Pigeons on the Romford Road. As well as records of these fabulous events, Newham Heritage Service’s collection of community newsletters share precious insights into people’s daily lives. From the East London Gay Community’s guidance sheet on police interactions to personal testimonies from local disabled lesbians, there is so much to learn.
Featuring material from Newham Heritage Service.
